January 1818, the incredible teenaged Mary Shelley, launched the genre of Horror with the publication of her novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. In Fox’s original two-act play, “Frankenstein’s Mary Shelley,” Mary Shelley’s life struggles to overcome social disdain as well as support herself and her child as a woman writer during her time, merge and dialogue with her fascinating story of a scientist and his re-animated corpse. Source texts are from Mary Shelley’s famous novel, other of her published works, and the correspondence, journal entries and poetry of her husband Percy Shelley; her stepsister, Claire Clairemont; Lord Byron, as well as writings of Mary Wollstonecraft and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
The play features flexible casting and is perfect for theatre department productions. The minimum number of performers required are 4 F and 4M. There are 29 roles in the total ensemble. The original production featured 21 performers.
